Filming & Photography at Lighthouses

The lighthouses in our care are vital aids to navigation and situated in remote and often inaccessible locations. We have several sites that are open to the public and these have been risk assessed and modified to provide a greater degree of control and safety for the public and are therefore more suited for filming purposes.

In certain cases, we will consider requests for filming and photography at other locations.

Please see our Guide to Filming at NLB Sites.

Applying

Please email us to discuss your project before completing our Use of NLB Assets form
enquiries@nlb.org.uk

We will need at least six weeks notice to process your application. Please provide as much detail as possible when completing the Use of NLB Assets form and return it to us with:

  • A copy of your certificate of liability insurance (to cover £10 million)
  • Risk Assessment
  • Proof of permission from landowner if the land isn’t owned by NLB

Your request will be circulated internally to relevant teams within NLB for comments and approval.

Please note that even if we have approved your filming request, our priority is for the safety of the mariner, and there might be occasions when we need to cancel at short notice. This could be due to staff being called away to attend to emergency maintenance or weather impacting on operations.

Fees

In most circumstances, we will need to charge a fee for the use of the lighthouse and for our staff’s time.

Neighbours

At some of our sites the former Keeper’s cottages and some of the land surrounding the lighthouses are privately owned. No filming can take place without our neighbour’s permission. We can help contact them if necessary.

Rock Lighthouses

We can’t accept requests to film at rock stations such as Bell Rock, Skerryvore, Dubh Artach and Chicken Rock.
