“I’m in my second year of an Electrical Engineering apprenticeship with NLB. I’m combining college studies with a lot of opportunities to get out on site and take part in more hands on work. Highlights have included helicopter travel to the Monach Isles, Haskeir and Mallaid Point in the Western Isles, places I would never have been able to see were it not for this job. I recently stayed on the Bell Rock, my first pillar light. Looking forward to future trips and making further progress in my college studies.”

“I’ve worked for NLB for over 40 years, starting as a Clerkess Typist in the late 1970s after seeing an advert in the Edinburgh Evening News. During my time here, I’ve served in seven different departments and I’ve held quite varied roles from Office Junior, Payroll Clerk, Secretary to the General Manager, PA to Director of Marine Operations and my present position, Maintenance Systems Assistant. I’ve also seen a lot of changes during nearly half a century – going from manual typewriters to high tech computers being one that’s had the biggest impact on my working life, and also a lot of changes in how lighthouses work. It’s certainly a unique organisation to work for and although I’ve always been office based, I’ve been lucky enough to visit quite a few lighthouses. My time as a PA saw me attending conferences and meetings in many far-flung places – Monaco, Frankfurt and Dundee to name but a few. I’ve always been proud to tell people that I work for the Northern Lighthouse Board, as there is such a history behind us, but I think we also have a bright future.”
