Orkney Harbour Master Appointed as New Commissioner with Northern Lighthouse Board

Brian Archibald, Orkney Islands Council Harbour Master and Head of Marine Services, Engineering and Transport, has joined the Northern Lighthouse Board as a Commissioner (Non-Executive Director).

Mike Bullock, Chief Executive of the Northern Lighthouse Board said:

 “Brian’s impressive background and experience as a highly skilled Mariner is a fantastic addition to our board of Commissioners and we are delighted to welcome him to NLB. This is a unique role which offers the exciting opportunity to contribute to the strategic leadership and governance of NLB, in the delivery of a critical safety service to all mariners.”

Before joining Orkney Island Council in 2012, Brian served for 36 years in the Royal Navy as a warfare officer rising to the rank of Commodore. His Royal Navy Career included the command of three warships and the latter part of his naval career was focussed on project team leadership for complex ship and weapon maintenance and procurement programmes including the design of the new Type 26 Frigate and the leasing of the Royal Navy’s ice breaker and patrol vessel.

Commenting on his appointment with NLB, Brian said:

“I’m thrilled to be joining such an interesting and unique organisation and to be able to support its vital safety service to mariners in Scottish and Isle of Man waters.”

As a Commissioner, Mr Archibald will help provide non-executive leadership, challenge, oversight and support to the executive team through regular Board and committee meetings as well as participating in visits to NLB’s operational sites across Scotland and the Isle of Man.

The appointment took effect from 1 April 2020.
