Cantick Head Lighthouse is situated on the southeast coast of the Island of Hoy in the Orkney Islands. The tower, lightkeepers’ cottages, sundial pedestal, and outbuildings are grade B listed areas of architectural and historic interest.
History
1854: The Commissioners made representations to Trinity House and the Board of Trade in February and quickly received statutory approval.
1856: Construction did not begin until two years after approval, due to a lengthy correspondence with Trinity House and the Board of Trade regarding approval of specification, character of the light, and acceptance of building tenders.
1858: The light was first exhibited on the night of 15 July.
1913: A fog horn was established at the site in October of this year.
1987: The fog horn was discontinued.
1991: The light became automated.
