A charitable Trust Fund has been set up to administer the money received from The Island Race in July 2000. The Trust is a Recognised Scottish Charity (Scottish Charity Number SC 032089) and its purpose is to assist in the provision of training, education and support of suitable Merchant Navy Officer Trainees for Merchant Navy Officer traineeships under the sponsorship of the Commissioners. The Black Bequest was established in 1919 by a Mrs Janet Black as a memorial to her brother James. The Black Bequest remains as a charitable fund today and assistance is available to retired Lightkeepers, Retained Lighthouse Keepers, Attendants and their families of the Northern Lighthouse Board. The Trust is a Recognised Scottish Charity (Scottish Charity Number SC 009568)

The Commissioners have set up the Northern Lighthouse Heritage Trust (Company Number SC365755) and it is a Registered Scottish Charity (SC040872). Amongst its responsibilities will be to help preserve and conserve some items acquired by the Commissioners but no longer needed to support their Statutory role funded by Light Dues.
