Mull of Galloway Lighthouse ©  Rae BoydThe Northern Lighthouse Board working in partnership with the South Rhins Community Development Trust have now opened the Mull of Galloway Lighthouse (near Stranraer) for tours on Saturday & Sundays (1000 - 1530) from April - September.
The tower built by Robert Stevenson, in 1830, stands on the most southerly point on the Scottish coast, from here you can see Ireland's Antrim Hills and Mountains of Mourne, the Cumbrian coast and the Machars and along the ridge of Mona's Isle on the Isle of Man.

Please note this tour is not suitable for anyone suffering from heart, breathing or balance difficulties and that children under 1m in height will not be allowed access, this includes carried children.

North Ronaldsay Lighthouse
North Ronaldsay Lighthouse   © Peter Donnelly The Northern Lighthouse Board working in partnership with the North Ronaldsay Trust have now opened North Ronaldsay Lighthouse, Orkney, for tours on Saturday & Sundays (12 noon - 1730) from May - September and at other times by arrangement, Contact Mr W Muir Tel: 01857 633257.

The new lighthouse tower was designed and built by Alan Stevenson in 1854, and is Britain's tallest land-based lighthouse. The original lighthouse beacon built by Thomas Smith in 1789 is still standing nearby.

Ardnamurchan Lighthouse
The Northern Lighthouse Board working in partnership with the Ardnamurchan Trust have opened Ardnamurchan Lighthouse to the public for tours during the summer season. The tower built by Alan Stevenson in 1849 stands on the most westerly point of the British mainland. There is also an excellent Visitors Centre and Tea room. The panoramic views of the Hebrides are unsurpassed and the surrounding area abounds in wildlife..

Please note this tour is not suitable for anyone suffering from heart, breathing or balance difficulties and that children under 1m in height will not be allowed access, this includes carried children. On days when essential maintenance is taking place the lighthouse will be closed to visitors.

Start Point Lighthouse, Sanday, Orkney
On the 2 October 2006 Start Point lighthouse celebrated 200 years of operation. To mark this occasion the lighthouse was open to the public on a limited number of days during the season. This venture was so successful we have continued to open the light with the kind assistance of the Sanday Ranger. The lighthouse, which is unique with its black & white stripes, is situated on the tidal island of Start Point on Sanday’s exposed eastern tip
.

Guided visits to the light are planned (weather permitting) on the following dates during 2010:-
Sunday May 23rd
Sunday June 20th
Monday July 12th
Saturday August 7th and Sunday August 8th
Wednesday September 8th

Booking is essential for these tours, for further information on timings and meeting locations please contact the Sanday Ranger, Rod Thorne, Tel: 01857 600341. Binoculars would be useful and wellies are essential!

Public access to Northern Lighthouse Board lighthouses is restricted to those sites mentioned on this page. It should be noted that at some sites the Northern Lighthouse Board have sold some redundant buildings within the lighthouse complex and are not responsible for the maintenance of these building.

The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses
The Museum of Scottish Lighthouses (Fraserburgh) consists of the first lighthouse built on mainland Scotland and a purpose-built museum housing artefacts donated by the Northern Lighthouse Board and the general public. The museum building contains several galleries containing a fabulous collection of glass lenses, lighting technology and social history artefacts covering the lives of the men and families who guarded Scotland’s coastline for over two hundred years. There are audio-visual displays and interactive exhibits that will engage you both in science and history. There is also a café with windows looking out onto the entrance of the Moray Firth.
