AIS AS AN AID TO NAVIGATION
Mariners are advised that, with immediate effect, AIS is being transmitted as an Aid to Navigation (AtoN) from this buoy station. When observed on the Minimum Keyboard Display (MKD), the minimum carriage requirement for SOLAS vessels, the mariner will see:
MMSI number: 992351041
Name: New Rocks Buoy
Position: 56° 39.057' North (approx.) 006° 03.281' West (approx.)
Mariners using certain Radar and Electronic Chart Displays may see a symbol on the display and, on interrogation, the above information and bearing & distance from the observer will be available. If displayed, the screen symbol for an AIS AtoN is a diamond shape. Mariners are referred to NOTICE TO MARINERS NO 19 OF 2008 (DATED 1 OCTOBER 2008), for further information.
Currently there is a variance on information that will be displayed by different manufacturers’ Electronic Chart and Radar equipment. The transmission from this station is repeated every 10 minutes and includes the following messages:
Type 6 - AtoN Monitoring
Type 8 - IMO Met/Hydro message: average wave height/period (updated hourly)
Type 21 - AtoN Identifier message. AtoN type: Starboard Hand Mark
