The General Lighthouse Authorities will be hosting a Maritime Uses of Galileo (MARUSE) demonstration in Oban Bay on 4 MARCH 2008. The demonstration aims to raise awareness of Galileo and new Aids to Navigation technology. As such, there will be a series of Galileo pseudolites (ground based satellite units) installed around the Bay, broadcasting ‘Galileo-Like’ signals on the E5a and E5b frequencies. These frequencies have been selected to ensure that there is no interference with GPS reception in the bay. During the Aids to Navigation demonstration, NLV PHAROS will manoeuvre inside the bay, deploying an IALA Emergency Wreck Marking buoy at two locations. The first position is on the West side of Sgeir Rathaid ledge at 56° 24.790’ North 005° 29.407’ West; the second is on the East side of the ledge at 56° 24.875’ North 005° 29.209’ West (positions approximate). The demonstration shall take place between approximately 0900-1500, with a one day rehearsal scheduled for 27 FEBRUARY 2008. During these times, NLV Pharos shall transmit a second AIS position from prototype equipment, in addition to her standard AIS. The prototype equipment shall be broadcasting using MMSI number 002576429 and shall be identified using the name ‘NLV Pharos – MARUSE’. The position given in this broadcast should not be relied on. During the demonstration and/or rehearsal, any interference issues or concerns, should be directed to the project manager, Dr Alan Grant, on 07747768445.
