AIS TRIALS

Northern Lighthouse Board
Edinburgh, 24 November 2008

The General Lighthouse Authorities will be testing the use of AIS on an Emergency Wreck Marker Buoy in Oban Bay on 3 DECEMBER 2008.  The tests aims are to prove the correct operation of new Aids to Navigation (AtoN) technology and that AIS AtoN can receive and re-transmit messages from AIS SARTS (Search and Rescue Transmitters).

During the Aids to Navigation tests, NLV POLE STAR will manoeuvre inside the bay, deploying an IALA Emergency Wreck Marking buoy at two locations. The first position is on the West side of Sgeir Rathaid ledge at 56° 24.790’ North 005° 29.407’ West; the second is on the East side of the ledge at  56° 24.875’ North 005° 29.209’ West (positions approximate). As well as transmitting the position of the Emergency Wreck marker Buoy, the equipment will transmit three other Virtual AIS targets to simulate cardinal marks around the test wreck location.

The tests shall take place between approximately 0900 and 1500. In preparation for the tests, AIS messages with a limited range shall be broadcast from the NLB Oban depot

During the preparation and testing, any interference issues or concerns should be directed to Alan Stewart, NLB Electrical Engineer, on 0777 582 0616.
