A PAINTING of the Bell Rock Lighthouse by Scottish artist John Lowrie Morrison was unveiled on Thursday 3 February 2011 by HRH The Princess Royal at the Palace of Holyroodhouse to mark the 200th anniversary of the famous landmark. The oil on canvas painting, “Rain Squall on the Bell Rock Lighthouse”, was donated to the Board by the artist, John Lowrie Morrison, known as Jolomo.
The bicentenary of the Bell Rock Lighthouse has really caught the imagination of the Museums, Galleries, Heritage bodies and Community Groups who have a shared interest in the Bell Rock. Various events have already taken place but there are still a number of exhibitions, talks and events to enjoy, these are detailed in the Bell Rock 200 leaflet..

Lecture - Tuesday 1 February 2011Author, Bella Bathurst gave a Lecture in Edinburgh “Why Do We Need a Lighthouse? The Bell Rock and the Stevensons Now” This event was organised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in partnership with the Northern Lighthouse Board and was supported by Inchcape Shipping Services. Conference - Friday 4 February 2011The Bell Rock Lighthouse, the Stevensons and Emerging Issues in Aids to Navigation The Royal Society of Edinburgh, in conjunction with the Northern Lighthouse Board, held a one day Conference on 4 February 2011. The first half of this day-long Conference concentrated on the history of the Bell Rock and associated matters, and the second half considered current use of traditional aids to navigation and then took a glimpse into the future. The Conference was attended by the Northern Lighthouse Board's Patron Her Royal Highness The Princess Royal. This event was organised by the Royal Society of Edinburgh in partnership with the Northern Lighthouse Board and was supported by Inchcape Shipping Services. The conference booklet can be access here

Firework Display, Arbroath - Tuesday 1 February 2011Blaze of Colour Sparks off the Year of Light On February 1, 2011, exactly two hundred years after Arbroath’s horizon was lit up by the first beam of light from the Bell Rock Lighthouse, the town of Arbroath reciprocated by lighting up the sky with a spectacular fireworks display. The fireworks, which were accompanied by music, launched the Year of the Light, the town’s celebrations of the bicentenary of the Bell Rock Lighthouse and were voted a great success by the 5,000-strong crowd.
