Director of Marine Operations

The Marine Operations Department is responsible for two multi function tenders, NLV PHAROS and NLV POLE STAR which operate around the coasts of Scotland and the Isle of Man, and an operational waterfront base facility in Oban and management and support staff in Edinburgh.

The department is also responsible for the NLB contract helicopter, which is utilised for transfer of materials and personnel to remote locations inaccessible by road.

The Oban base provides a berth and logistic support for the ships, and helicopter landing & refueling facility for the NLB contract helicopter. In addition navigation buoys are serviced and painted, storage provided for NLB spares, and engineering project & maintenance stores prepared for ship and air transport.

The ships deliver stores and supplies to lighthouses via helicopter, carry out buoy laying, onsite maintenance and recovery, undertake the statutory inspection of the navigation aids on oil rigs, renewable energy sites and local aids to navigation throughout the NLB area.

The Marine Operations Department is responsible for all navigation issues including the Board's statutory authority for the supervision and management of all lights, buoys and beacons and provides advice to the Scottish Government, who licence developments below the high water mark under the Marine (Scotland) Act 2010 part 4 The Marine Operations Department is also responsible for negotiating commercial activities utilising any spare capacity..
