The Engineering department is mainly based in Edinburgh, with teams in Oban, Orkney, Shetland and Inverness. The Engineers department carry out maintenance on Scottish and Isle of Man lighthouses on an annual or biennial basis and provide rapid response to outages to meet the strict levels of working availability standards set by the International Association of Aids to Navigation and Lighthouse Authorities (IALA). The Engineers department is also involved in project & design for lighthouses and buoys to ensure the estate incorporates the latest technologies in light sources, power systems and control systems. The on-going refurbishment and maintenance of lighthouse buildings is also controlled by the Engineers. The provision, maintenance and development of new systems including Automatic Identification System (AIS) and Differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) is controlled by the Engineers.
